After that I did some more. They were a hit with the kids that visited. So I made some monsters. And then some more tiny octopi. And then it kind of rolled from there. I was at a market last weekend (more on that in another post, probably tomorrow) and suddenly these little guys were getting some interest. They were bought for kids, by kids and by people wanting to use them as needle cushions.

So, time to introduce some of them... I never got around to take a picture before the last market, but these are the ones that's left, and I am working on getting more made. :)
Gonna do more markets coming, as I am suddenly helping out hosting Lørdagsmarkedet (Saturday markets) here in Larvik, so there'll probably be more about that later as well. :) Sorkneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12143395403056569606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3172653088946404527.post-69773582550838585082015-07-27T17:43:00.000+02:002015-07-27T17:53:55.681+02:00Landscapes - Eftang og MølenA small update again as I am putting things away safely until mid-August, this is a photo of the A5 landscapes I have left. Seems to be an even two of each I got left even, some subjects are sold out. I've been trying to nail colour while painting in a new way for me in these and therefore had several of each subject as I tried my way. Since they're all from local places, I've had some interest in them, which was fun, as I have never really considered myself a landscape artist - but I've been doing a lot of it lately, not in the least my inks. All of them has been from Ølbergholmen on Eftang (a five minute drive from my own house) and the cliffs at Saltsteinane on Mølen, Norways largest beach of rolling stones, half an hour from here.

I do have a supply of these small canvases though, so I am probably gonna try some more of this, maybe in another paint. They're a bit rough which makes for very relaxed and fun painting since I don't get hung up in details, I just go with whatever happens - a bit of a rarity for me.

Anyways, here goes. :)

The first are some small inks that I've been doing on A5 (210 x 148 mm or 8.27 x 5.83 inches) paper. I use the same as on the big ones, a small brush and liquid ink in bottles.

And just for fun, here's a few fish drawings I did in mixed media in an attempt to work out how some paint I had laying around worked. I did a fish drawing and copied onto A5 paper using the self made lightbox, and then went to work with paint, water, coloured pencils, pens and permanent marker. You can see I'm not quite sure on the medium at first, but I got the hang of it - especially after finding out that the opaqueness of the paint changed dramatically when drying. I might have another go with this using another drawing at a later point, it was fun - and I put them in my stand as well to get some colour splotches.

I'll get some proper scans of the inks later, but I am kind of dreading the huge scanning session I need to do, so I'll just have to plan an evening of scanning sometime before next market, since I haven't done scanning in ages so even old inks and drawings needs to get on file. Sorkneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12143395403056569606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3172653088946404527.post-7509098950376081992015-07-23T15:21:00.002+02:002015-07-23T15:36:55.003+02:00Market DaysI have been doing some market days lately, where I've had a stand. The first was in June, and it was kind of scary since I have never done anything like it before. My husband also made some wood work to put there - it was on such a short notice that I just had to gather whatever I had and go from there. Since my arm and hand has been partially "out of function" since Easter, I couldn't really sit down and draw all day either, as it would have worsened my condition.

First thing happening was the day before the market day though, after I had managed to gather a bunch and took this picture I put out on social media hoping to pick up some interest.

People started to show interest and buy right away online - so that was a good start. I did also post it in some groups locally also adding some very cheap used kids clothing hoping that might get some people into the stand and to fill it up, basically.

The day started off ok, we didn't panic too much - but then the rain set it. And it rained. And it rained. Thankfully we got ourselves some walls for the stand when we looked at the weather report and realised what was gonna happen. We had to put the drawings, paintings and prints in the back of it to save it from being drenched, and we had to take a lot of wood stuff off the ground.

I did however have great fun. There were people dropping by, talking to me, talking about art, and in general when it was not pouring I did get interest. With the sales the stand paid for itself, and I had gotten more local contacts. The clothes thing was a bust though, there was brand new clothes sold for silly prices at the stores around. This is a photo of my stand with a rather scary lady bug in it.

Then I did another one in the beginning of July, a happening once a summer that is called "night town" where all stores are open until midnight, there's shows, stands, entertainment, record tries, etc. Most stores here (we're in a town, not a big city) close between 4 and 6 pm, unless they're in a shopping mall (then they usually close at 8), and some bigger outlets sometimes have open until 8 pm. (We're not talking about food stores now.)

There was a throng of people and the weather was nicer - even if there was a couple of drizzles. The stand cost more to have there, but I was hoping it would at least pay itself like last time. Also, I had found out that knitting didn't hurt my arm, and I brought some of the random stuff I had knitted. Again I had lots of interested people to talk about art, but the two groups I drew most were kids loving my knitted octopuses and the monsters with cages my husband made for them and old ladies marvelling over how I knit whatever comes out of my brain without a pattern. Since I knitted a bit while I sat there as well, that might've have helped, I guess. This is a picture of the stand early on, it didn't take long before we put up a back wall and half one on the side, but it was more open and people seemed to like that.

The sales weren't too good on the night town, it was clearly the wrong crowd for me, even if I got quite a bit of interest. It seems that people for the main part were walking around looking around for the insane sales, some of them updating hourly. I did however sell my most pricey painting late at night, and I know it went to a collector that has her "own" steady framer, so that was a bit of a boost after not too many sales earlier.

All the interest, and being able to talk art with all these people has been a wonderful experience. I don't know if I'll do anything like "night town" again since it costs a bit to put up a stand and the sales might not come, but I am going to Lågendalsmarkedet (a market on a large farm) late in August, where there will be two days of auctions, flea markets, entertainment, music and stands. Any sales there will go directly into the plus account, and I know a couple people there at least, so I am looking forward to that. And I am knitting monsters and trying to do the occasional drawing since my arm and hand is getting better. I will also try to found out if the more fantasy and sci-fi part of my stuff might fit into Banzai Con hosted locally next year if they have anything like stands or if it's just a gathering with entertainment.

Anyway, it's been fun experiences, I'll do some of it again, and it has made me realise that I might be able to sell some of my stuff online since people asked about that. Some ladies even mentioned that you can sell knitting patterns, so maybe I should look into that too, hehe.

As I were picking out stuff for the stands I realised this blog is horribly outdated, so I am going to post some of what I have been selling the next days. We have some lovely peonies in our yard, and rather than picking them - we decided to make our own paper versions to have inside hanging in the windows. In mentioning that we were gonna make them, I got asked how we do it, so I thought we might as post the process. I got my trusty assistant with me, and we'll try to do this step by step.

For these, you need three napkins, a little piece of string or thread, and the only tools you need are scissors.

It doesn't really matter if the napkins are two or three layers, it just means there's a difference in density and fluff.

1. Open the napkins and cut through the middle, one way. If your kids can use scissors, they can do this - it doesn't matter if they cut a bit off the middle or it gets a bit frayed.
2. Put the napkins you've cut in two in a stack, you should have six pieces from three napkins.

3. Fold the napkin stack like you would to make a fan.
4. Find a piece of string or thread to tie around the middle. One end has to be a bit long, as that's what you'll hang it from.
5. Round off the ends by cutting a bit off the corners. Sometimes it's nice not to round them, but if making them look like pompom flowers, this helps.

6. Open the sides a bit, then start to slowly tease the layers of napkins out of their fan shape with your fingers. This step might be a bit tricky for some kids. The layers will be very thin and fine, but if they're torn a bit, it doesn't matter. It'll hide within the "ball" in the end, and if there's any pieces hanging down it or anything, just cut them off. You're supposed to get all the layers apart, meaning 12 if it's a two layer napkin, 18 if it's a three layer napkin.

Almost so you can't tell from the real deal! (The real deal here being the dark pink ones... )
Ops. Anyway, this is something I did last November:

So, I got this little designer in my house that told me exactly what she wanted, and in what colours. Since there was no way I'd manage to find this anywhere, I had no choice but digging out my knitting pins.

At one point during the knitting I <span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="fbPhotoSnowliftCaption" tabindex="0">started
to wonder if I at some point ceased knitting and started reinventing
some sort of self defense mechanism for women from the dark ages.

<span class="fbPhotosPhotoCaption" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id="fbPhotoSnowliftCaption" tabindex="0">But I hadn't, I managed to finish it within a few days, and the designer was very happy both about the delivery time and the outcome. I got properly paid in home made bracelets.
It had been an awfully busy week and weekend with costume making, Halloween celebration with kids, house guests and whatnot, but I managed to get some time on this as well.

The idea is that you're only allowed to use that day, Nov 1st, on it, you can't start on it beforehand, and you have to post it before midnight your time zone. I've done it for years now, so it'd be a pity to miss it. I had to end it when I was about to fall asleep over the tablet, pen in hand, hehe.

Also, have some pumpkins, we had fun making them, and my kid decided what we were making this year. Small indoor pumpkins, huge outdoor pumpkin.
I think perhaps it is about time for me to play catch up. Also, there is a chance I'll change the kinds of posts here a little bit, as I have been doing a lot of other crafts than drawing in various forms lately, and maybe it's time to show some of that here.

Trying to keep some order in the chaos by starting from where I posted last and make some posts every couple of days or so about what I've been up to, is the goal.

Kicking it off with a larger one. In October I did Inktober. I didn't run out of ink, but I did run out of time, it happens. I was lucky enough to make a few though. As would be expected, there is quite a bit of difference in the quality, but here they are nonetheless. Hopefully I'll make even more next time.
We're in NATO and UN, but we're not in EU.

Some of you might've seen the street art becoming popular with the EU flag in some way or another and NO WAY with the R either missing or slightly obscure... well, yes, that would be us. Norway. The No Way.

Anyways... Slightly insomniac today. So I did a political piece. Which is not something I often throw out there. Two blog posts in one night, oh my.
No, I mean, the pillar of me... This isn't Planescape: Torment... ;)

Just messing around. Let's call it getting ready for November 1st (Self Portrait Day). ;) Strange times, when I sit down my drawing is competing with my writing these days, as well as school as I've started evening classes.

Anyways, it's fun and it's helping me with some fundamentals. :)

Tonight that meant making some kind of portrait, and finding some ref photos when I had decided what I wanted to do with my sketch.

Since I watched Guardians of the Galaxy yesterday, this is what I ended up drawing. A few hours of playing around. :)
So, this is the thing I have been fighting with. I could go on and on about that, but whatever, artist blah blah blah. C&C welcome and appreciated, here, FB or PM. I know, the bg needs work. I just deleted all the people looking at her too. Sometimes posting something helps me see the mistakes in another light.

Anyways. I kind of love it and hate it. As usual. :P Work in progress.

So, you could say that it's been hot here lately. So hot that in fact I've been more busy cooling down myself and my family more than doing too much art. Also, a bit of summer things like amusement parks, roller coasters, tenting, swimming and building play houses to fasten slides on (there might be a panel about that later...).

Anyway, I've done a bit here and there, and after being to an indoor concert today where not only the people on the stage almost melted off it but the audience almost melted off their chairs, I ended up finishing this one.
I've started on both more panels and drawings, so hopefully I'll post some more later. I just haven't really had the energy to finish any of it, heh.

But here's a photo I've posted other places from some sleepless nights earlier in the heat wave, I worked my way through them doing an old thing I used to do a lot:
And bunnehs! Been away for a few days, and what's the first thing I do when I come back home? I make another one of these thingies. I guess they're kind of relaxing, and there's barely any space for learning in my head these days. :)

And for some reason I seem to attract a bit of hits here with these, so... Not sure what that is all about.

Anyways, first a small note about the weekend...
Also, here's one that I made before I left, but didn't have time to get out here. Sorry about the quality of the text and stuff... I was actually fighting quite a cold.

... I guess, for context, I should add that my husband comes from US, I am Norwegian, and we live in Norway. Which makes his family live far away, so we're not exactly having a daily life outside the internet with them. Thank goodness we have that though! :) Sorkneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12143395403056569606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3172653088946404527.post-55407788128301419772014-06-09T02:05:00.000+02:002014-06-09T02:20:37.525+02:00Based on a true story. That is my choice. Often I accompany that choice with wine. Or rum. Or beer. Or just soda. Or tea. Or coffee. It is my choice.

These Friday nights that I spend like this is not because it's the best I can do. It is because it's what I choose to do. It's what makes me relax, leave the world behind, how I make my brain do loops that it's not allowed to do elsewhere in my daily life.

I do not make money on my drawing. Well, not enough to call it a living anyway, even the tax office laughs and assures me I am in no danger of overstepping any boundaries anytime soon. What you see on my blog, my pages and any exhibitions is stuff that I have made for myself, my own goals, and not for any clients. Which also makes me able to choose when to show my stuff - as there is no deadline, no publication. If I feel it's not something for the public eye... it's not out there.

It is, however, how I survive. I might not be making any money on it. I'm actually not even sure I'd manage to live in a world where a client dictates what I am drawing - I am not that a good artist that I can fulfill other peoples visions. I am not good enough for that.

But it is how my brain recuperates. Even when it's a fight to get the image done.

So yeah, I might not be a pro. But I love it nonetheless. And I don't care about how other makes their stuff, how they're marketing it, how they're making a living, how they're doing whatever. If I like it, I'll look at it. If I don't, I won't. Simple as that.

That was kind of a comment to a bunch of stuff I see happening these days within my chosen art community. That said, this thing has been fighting with me from the start, but I seem to be unable to put the darn thing down. So here it is so far, any C&C appreciated, here, PM, email, comments on FB, whatever.
Might do something more later, but for now I am finished unless someone finds anything glaringly wrong, since I've gone a bit blind on it.

Sorkneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12143395403056569606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3172653088946404527.post-6593673474573375762014-04-04T23:13:00.001+02:002014-04-04T23:35:07.353+02:00Russ - a spring phenomenon in NorwaySo this year I got to decorate a "russe-van" and some "russe-sweaters" for these wonderful youngsters celebrating their 12 or 13 years of (free) school is over and done with. They're old enough to drink, vote and drive by the time they become russ, and therefore, of course, it is all celebrated by a huge party starting late in April, ending at 17th of May (our National Day). Usually there is either an old beaten up car or van or a huge up to date bus driving them to their parties and celebrations.

I won't get too much into the insanity of russ here, I think I've told people enough about them earlier, but the gang I helped out this year wanted "team sweaters" that they started to wear during their "russekro" which is basically last year students only private pub parties starting months before the actual celebration and a van decorated for them.

I haven't actually seen neither the van nor the sweaters myself, but they are very pleased, so I am pleased. :) And I hope to see it soon. Here's some pictures they've sent me though, I thought I'd put them here for fun. It is, after all, something I have created.

They were very specific about what they wanted, how they wanted it, and after making sure I knew exactly what they had in their brain, they let me just do my job. Perfect clients! They had a clear picture in their head, and had even made their OWN early sketches! :D

Anyways, a bunch of girls from farms, this is what they wanted:

This is why I was asking about vector months ago. I still haven't learned it, so I better get around to, in case I get asked again. That was some big .psd files for the car print firm. :D

I won't say how many hours I've used on it after I started, but it's waaaay too many. On the other hand, I *do* feel like that the amount of things I learned compared to the hours spent after I really should have been done with it was worth it.

And that's all that matters, isn't it?

I've been rather busy for a while, both with not painting, and doing stuff that I can't show. Since it's been so long I thought I better post some random WIPs and stuff I've made just for fun.

I dunno, I saw this character in a Miss Marple thing I liked:

Just a random forest:

Oh, I'm attacking something. I guess:

Sorry about the lack of updates, I've been working with stuff I can't show, but I've been drawing. :)

And I don't believe I put an update on the exhibition here, but I did
get in! With two pictures! One of very, very few. It was two of the
pencil sketches, the kid with the ice flake and the somewhat random
portrait that I wasn't sure if I should turn in. Beats me, but there you
got it. Apparently there was a bit of discussion about getting even
more pieces in, but they opted for those two.

Was awesome to be at the opening, surreal experience seeing people
standing in front of my work discussing it while waving their arms. It's
currently moved to another gallery, so it's still going. :)

Anyways, SPD 2013. :) Had to rush it as midnight approached, as usual. Had a nice swollen and
red face after some bad face paint on Halloween, but it came out looking
like me anyways.

Here's
one that I just realised the last days that I never posted online. It's
just a VERY random doodle, but for some reason some people like it a
lot. There's several versions of it, none of them finished in any way,
but here's one. To my defense, I seem to remember there was rum
involved. ;)

And here's another one. I was browsing through my old files and dragged out some that I found had some potential. This one I've clearly used some obscure reference for the girl, but it's a year ago since I worked on it, and I can't find the reference anywhere, no idea where I picked it up, so I just randomly started painting on it again.

Yesterday was the day where I had to deliver for the exhibition. I was originally going to deliver pencils drawings and oil paintings. I realised after a while that I would not want to put in the oil paintings, and wanted to go for digital prints.

First of all, I had no idea I would be so nervous when delivering them.

When I showed up, I was so nervous I had to write my address six times before I nailed it. Nobody could read my signature on the agreement because my hands were shaking. I wrote the address instead of the title on two of the labels before I got it right. It really surprised me, as I can usually go into anything without any nerves, or at least not much to speak of. Stagefright has never been a problem for me, it helps me getting more focused on the task at hand.

Husband later told me I've been running around like a headless chicken during the last two days before delivery, and in general being stressed the last week. Threw him back a bit I guess, since I don't normally do that... Which explains why, when I was framing them before turning them in, I managed to ruin two nails, breaking one frame and go through countless cuts before getting the "frame within the frame" right, I guess. Gold medal in clumsiness.

I think I've narrowed it down to not so much being afraid of being judged
by the jury, or maybe not get any works in, but for the first time
seriously actually trying live out part of my dream. It might be a long
way away yet, but that was a huge step just to get the foot in, getting
told I should turn something in, for the first time delivering something
to physically hold on to and not online, and actually delivering
without chickening out or anything.

Second, I had no idea this exhibition was so big. When I got there I realised this might be a bit bigger than I thought it would be. At some point, someone told there was 500 and only 80 or 90 works would get in. Since I was in the state I was, I didn't quite grab if it was 500 people or 500 works, but I really, really hope it was works. Since every person can deliver up to 6 works. I just saw a few works too, so I have no idea of the level there, the moment they were turned in they put them face in against the wall.

Well, anyways... Here's what I end up turning in. First the three pencils. I need to get that photographing pencils down better, I got some glare on the pictures, but I was running out of time, and of course the last day it was pouring down and dark clouds outside, and barely any light came into the house. Did my best though.

The first one I really like. I was gonna render the middle there like a huge piece of ice that you take of the water on the ground during autumn or spring, but I rather liked it being shiny white instead. The second one I also like a lot. I was gonna fix some stuff on it, but the paper is really rough and I've been working on it for a while - and realised that doing anything else on it would probably start to mess with the paper so I left it alone. When turning it in, the lady in the drawing department told me go turn it into graphics/prints even though I told her it was pencil, and another person over there had to come over and tell her it was indeed pencil - she needed to give it a second look. I have no idea if that's a good or a bad thing. The last one I feel ended up a bit slapdash, and you might say it was a plan B for pencils. I considered not turning it in, but did in the end.

Then it was the prints. I have talked to them about it, about turning them in instead of oils, and they were kind of enthusiastic with it, at least the lady I've talked to about it, since they've never had any digital works before in that exhibition at all. Especially since they first had no idea where to put them, and it ended up in "other techniques" instead of prints or drawings or paintings or anything. At least they didn't go into photo. There was both "oh, this is a first!" with smiles and nods - and people clearly clueless about how to make anything on a computer in the first place. I have no idea if being the first is a good or a bad thing, if there's anyone there that knows anything about it or if they think it's just a matter of clicking three buttons before you get an image...

Anyway, since I had already used quite an amount of time trying to get oils done in time, I knew that it was best for me to go with earlier works for the prints, so you have probably seen these ones before. The first is the one of my daughter, minus her name that is usually there, it didn't feel right to have her name on it, and also I had to go a couple of rounds with myself before putting an image of my daughter in there. If it goes through, it might be sold, and I had to think hard about my daughter being on someones wall. The second is the dad wizard, the one I made after we thought our daughter was playing a magician or a wizard and then she loudly announced that she was "dad". The third is the one I did for the light, after taking a bunch of photos during some intense winter sun, and I tried to capture it in a drawing.

And in the end, it might sound weird to you, but if I don't get any of them through (after all it is a massive amount of works and they need to chip it down whatever it was that was 500) it actually won't matter too much, but it would be a huge bonus. Just going through with this, delivering on time even not what I had expected to turn in, is a huge step. I have been congratulating myself all day even though the jury hasn't even started looking at them yet. Kind of proud of myself no matter the result. :) Sorkneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12143395403056569606noreply@blogger.com0
